February 2015 Cure Champion

Katharine Garvey, MD, MPH, Attending Physician, Division of Endocrinology, Boston Children’s Hospital

I am a pediatric endocrinologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Instructor at Harvard Medical School.  I love seeing patients and teaching residents and fellows, and I have a special clinical interest in type 1 diabetes (T1D). In addition to my work seeing patients, I also conduct research focusing on ways to improve the process of transition from pediatric to adult care for young adults with type 1 diabetes.

Ironically, after I finished my training in pediatric endocrinology, my son was diagnosed with T1D at age 4. In caring for my son, I now experience firsthand the complex demands of daily diabetes management, and this has strengthened my personal and professional commitment to diabetes patient care and research.

Dr. Garvey has been a featured speaker at JDRF’s annual Off to College program and TypeOneNation event.  She will be presenting the “early childhood” life stage breakout session at TypeOneNation Boston on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf.  For more details and to register, visit http://bit.ly/TONBoston2015.
