Jay Hewitt to be in Attendance at Sunday’s Cohasset Triathlon

Jay Hewitt was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes while studying law at the University of South Carolina in 1991. Determined not to let diabetes hold him back, Jay became an elite Ironman® triathlete and three-time member of the US National Team for Long Distance Triathlon.

Jay raced for Team USA at the Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in 2004, 2005, and 2006 in Sweden, Denmark, and Australia. He is the only athlete with type 1 diabetes to qualify for the US National Triathlon Team.

Today, Hewitt is a motivational speaker who travels across the country delivering the message that diabetes does not have to hold you back. In fact, he has partnered with Novo Nordisk, a global health care company dedicated to diabetes care, to raise awareness of the importance of properly managing blood glucose levels and to demonstrate that diabetes can be successfully integrated into your life and ambitions.

novoThe Ironman® triathlon is the world’s longest and most grueling endurance race–a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike race, then running a marathon–a total of 140 miles all in one day. Jay has competed in 14 Ironman® triathlons, 20 half Ironman® triathlons, and 8 individual marathons, and is a three-time finisher of the Boston Marathon. He has competed in as many as 4 Ironman® triathlons in a year. In 2006, he and his teammates won the 3,000 mile Race Across America bicycle race, cycling nonstop from San Diego, California, to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 5 days and 16 hours.

In addition to being an attorney, Jay is also a professional motivational speaker for his motivational program “Finish Line Vision®,” where he encourages people to reach their own personal finish line.
