October Cure Champion

Cameron’s Minions

Cameron was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on March 28, 2014 at 22 months old.  We are six months into diagnosis and the dust is starting to settle.  Our journey with JDRF started with a Bear named Rufus.  A friend had Rufus delivered, with the JDRF Bag of Hope, the week we came home from the hospital.

JDRF not only raises money for a cure but also supported our scared and uneasy family.  Cameron carried Rufus with him to the playground and to bed.  Even at such a young age he was able to understand where he would get his injections, thanks to Rufus and his color coded sites.  Every day I am amazed how resilient these children with T1D are.  We decided right away that we wanted to help this organization with all their efforts of support.

We joined the Central Massachusetts Walk as Cameron’s Minions because my son LOVES minions.  We sent out emails, taped up flyers, and posted on social media.  I never expected that we would have 75 people walking in the yellow minion shirts.  The Walk was a great way to expose our family and friends to the world of diabetes.  The day was filled with music, crafts, food, and fun!  It was reassuring for all of us to see all the kids and know Cameron is going to be okay.  We all crossed the finish line as a group and it’s a moment I will never forget.  Cameron was on his Dad’s shoulders looking back at everyone and my heart swelled at the love that was being shown to this little boy.

We met some wonderful people and look forward to next year!  We are already talking about ways to raise money for next year.  We are so thankful to everyone who has reached out to our family and JDRF.
